WILD WATERS

I have always been a big fan of turbulences. Understanding how these unpredictable chaotic phenomenas rule our world is something quite extraordinary to me. During my studies in physical oceanography, I worked for several years on numerical models trying to reproduce the tidal flow around Brittany, France and the formation of a tidal front around Ouessant Island (a tidal front can be seen as a consequence of the turbulences created by the tidal flow...). We could always add details to the model trying to be as realistic as possible (atmospheric fluxes at the boundaries, a precise coastline ...) but at one point, some parameters were just too small to be included, we had to adjust "buttons" and try to include some localized effect that our model could not include. Same as the butterfly effect in a meteorological model, if the flapping of the wings of a butterfly in Australia could affect the formation of a tornado in the USA, should / can  a meteorological model includes butterflies, pigeons or even planes ?
A surfer riding a wave evolves in the curl of the wave, a critical position between something well understood (the oscillation and propagation of waves) and the total chaos appearing when the breaking lip hit the surface of the water. When you shoot waves from the water or when you miss your duck dive as a surfer, there is nothing you can do against this unpredictable about of energy. There seems to be no rules in there. I could stare for hours looking at this mesmerizing show and bellow are a few selected moments of chaos in progress. Next time you are at the beach, if the water is clear, take a pair of goggles and go see by yourself.
